Speech & Drama Festival 2025

Will be held on the weekend of Friday 6th, Saturday 7th& Sunday 8th June.

Venue: Perth College, 31 Lawley Crescent, Mt Lawley.

All students will be involved.

Festival Categories

Important Note : Time limits will be strictly adhered to, or the candidate risks disqualification

Section A: Poetry
A memorised interpretation of a poem. Any poetry form.
Time Limit : Non-competitive for years 3 & 4 = 2 minutes

No costumes are to be worn by candidates. Movements and gesture to be kept to a minimum and appropriate to the subject matter. Please do not overdramatise, particularly with lyric poetry. Lyric poetry should primarily express thoughts and feelings.

Section B: Lyric Poetry
A memorised interpretation of a lyric poem.
Time Limit : 3 minutes
No costumes are to be worn by candidates. Movements and gesture to be kept to a minimum and appropriate to the subject matter. Please do not overdramatise, particularly with lyric poetry. Lyric poetry should primarily express thoughts and feelings.

Section C: Narrative Poetry
A memorised interpretation of a narrative poem.
Time Limit : 4 minutes
No costumes are to be worn by candidates. Movements and gesture to be kept to a minimum and appropriate to the subject matter. Please do not overdramatise, particularly with lyric poetry. Lyric poetry should primarily express thoughts and feelings.

Section D: Prose
A memorised interpretation of a prose passage.
Time Limit :  4 minutes
Year 4 – 5 = 2 minutes
Year 6 – 9 = 3 minutes
Year 10 – Open = 4 Mins

Section E: Dramatic Monologue
Adapted from a novel or scripted play, portraying one character’s thoughts and feelings.
Time Limit: 4 minutes
Costumes are optional. Any special effects, including lighting are the responsibility of performers and their teachers.Adapted from a play or novel portraying the thoughts and feelings of one (dramatic monologue) or characters for two or three players.

Section F: Scenes for Two or Three
Adapted from a novel or scripted play, performed by two or three candidates, portraying two or three characters.
Time Limit: 6 minutes
Costumes are optional. Any special effects, including lighting are the responsibility of performers and their teachers.Adapted from a play or novel portraying the thoughts and feelings of one (dramatic monologue) or characters for two or three players.

Section G: Show & Tell
Candidate to bring along an object of interest and speak about it to the audience.
Time Limit: 2 minutes
Non-competitive event

Section I: Ensemble Dramatised Poetry & Prose (EDPP)
Group to present one or more poems or prose passages.
Year 3 – 4 = 3 minutes
Year 5 – 6 = 5 minutes
Year 7 – 12 = 7 minutes
